The core concept

Why POD Revenue Is Not POD Profit

A sale is recorded as revenue the moment the buyer pays. What you keep is a different number, and for print-on-demand that gap can be large. These are the reasons revenue and profit diverge.

Sale price is not profit

The selling price is the top of the calculation, never the bottom. Every fee and cost between the checkout and your account balance reduces what you keep.

Shipping the buyer pays is revenue, not profit

Customer-paid shipping enters revenue, but it also creates a matching expense when you buy postage or a fulfillment label. The difference between the two is what matters.

POD fulfillment consumes selling price

Base garment, printing and fulfillment can consume a large part of the selling price. A design that looks profitable on price alone can leave very little contribution after the POD bill arrives.

Etsy fees reduce contribution margin

Listing, transaction, payment-processing and, in some countries, regulatory fees are deducted before profit is known. The fee structure varies by seller country and account circumstances.

Advertising changes profitability

Etsy Ads spend and, on attributed orders, Etsy Offsite Ads fees are real costs. An order's profit is only meaningful once advertising is included.

Margin leaks

The 5 Biggest Etsy POD Profit Leaks

1Production cost

Base garment plus printing and fulfillment can consume a large share of the selling price. Two sellers selling the identical design can have very different unit economics because their POD bills differ.

2Shipping discrepancies

What you charge the buyer for shipping and what you actually pay for postage or fulfillment are different numbers. When the gap goes negative, shipping silently removes profit from every order.

3Thin apparel margins

Low-priced shirts and hoodies look attractive on volume, but a low price leaves a weak contribution profit after fees plus production and shipping. Attractive price points are not the same as attractive margins.

4Advertising

Etsy Ads is a spend you control. Etsy Offsite Ads is a per-order fee on attributed sales. Modeling both matters because an order can look profitable before its acquisition cost is added.

5Volume without contribution margin

More orders do not automatically mean more profit. If each order contributes less than its share of fees, production and shipping, scaling simply multiplies a small or negative contribution.

The model

How Etsy POD Profit Is Calculated

The calculation starts with the total the buyer pays, then removes every fee and cost in order. The number left over is the contribution profit.

Order revenue = item price + shipping charged

Subtract from order revenue:

  • Etsy listing fee
  • Etsy transaction fee
  • Payment processing
  • Regulatory fee where applicable
  • Currency conversion fee where applicable
  • Etsy Ads
  • Offsite Ads where applicable
  • POD production cost
  • Actual shipping cost
  • Packaging / other variable costs
TRUE CONTRIBUTION PROFIT = order revenue โˆ’ total fees โˆ’ total costs

The exact Etsy fee structure varies by seller country and account circumstances. This site's fee configuration is organized per seller country (including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India and European markets) and reflects the fee values Etsy publishes at the time of writing.

Etsy transaction fee fact

Etsy's transaction fee is 6.5% of the total order amount, including the item price, shipping charged to the buyer, and gift wrapping where applicable.

The 6.5% transaction fee is one part of the selling cost. Listing fees, payment processing and, in some countries, regulatory or currency-conversion fees also apply, so 6.5% is never the full Etsy cost of a sale.

The acquisition edge

Etsy Offsite Ads and POD Contribution Margin

Etsy Offsite Ads can materially reduce contribution margin. They are worth modeling as a separate line because they apply per attributed order, not to every sale.

  • Model the applicable Offsite Ads rate for orders Etsy attributes to Offsite Ads.
  • Etsy's published Offsite Ads rates are 15% for sellers below the applicable sales threshold and 12% after reaching the higher threshold.
  • Etsy also publishes a maximum Offsite Ads fee per order.
  • The calculator models that cap according to its current fee configuration.
  • No universal conversion of the cap into other currencies is stated here, and this page does not invent local-currency caps. Confirm the current cap against Etsy's own policy for your account.

Whether a seller can opt out of Offsite Ads depends on Etsy's published criteria, which can change. Verify against Etsy's policy.

Worked example

POD Worked Example

The example below is illustrative and uses a single set of assumptions. It is not a universal POD margin benchmark and does not represent every Etsy seller.

Illustrative example โ€” one POD t-shirt sale

LineAmount
Item price$29.99
Shipping charged to buyer+$5.99
Order revenue$35.98
Etsy fees (listing $0.20 + transaction 6.5% $2.34 + payment processing 3% + $0.25 = $1.33)โˆ’$3.87
POD production cost (base + print)โˆ’$13.00
Actual shipping / fulfillment costโˆ’$5.50
Packaging / other variable costโˆ’$1.00
Contribution profit$12.61

Assumptions for this example only: US seller, Etsy Payments processing at the domestic 3% + $0.25 rate, no Offsite Ads on this order, no currency conversion and no Etsy Ads. Regulatory operating fee not charged for US sellers at the time of writing. Fees can vary by country, account and policy changes โ€” run your own numbers in the workspace.

What Makes a POD Product Worth Selling?

A design is worth scaling when its unit economics hold up. Evaluate each product against the same set of measurements.

  • Contribution profit per order
  • Contribution margin %
  • Production cost % of revenue
  • Shipping cost % of revenue
  • Advertising sensitivity (Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads)
  • Expected order volume
  • Refund / replacement exposure

FAQ

Etsy POD Profit Questions

What is a good profit margin for Etsy POD?

There is no universal ideal margin. The right margin depends on product category, acquisition costs, fulfillment costs, refunds, overhead and target income. A profit calculator helps model the seller's actual economics rather than assuming a universal benchmark.

How do I calculate Etsy POD profit?

Start with order revenue (item price plus shipping charged to the buyer). Subtract Etsy listing, transaction, payment-processing and any applicable regulatory or currency-conversion fees, plus Etsy Ads and any Offsite Ads fee. Then subtract POD production cost, actual shipping cost, and packaging or other variable costs. The remainder is the true contribution profit per order.

Does Etsy charge 6.5% on shipping?

Etsy's transaction fee is 6.5% of the total order amount, which includes the item price, shipping charged to the buyer, and gift wrapping where applicable. The shipping the buyer pays is part of the basis for the transaction fee.

Do Etsy Offsite Ads reduce POD profit?

Yes. When an order is attributed to Etsy Offsite Ads, Etsy applies the Offsite Ads fee to that order, which can materially reduce contribution profit. Sellers should model the applicable rate because it changes the true margin of those sales.

Should I include POD shipping in my Etsy profit calculation?

Yes, but treat the two sides separately: what you charge the buyer for shipping is revenue, while the actual fulfillment and shipping expense is a cost. Mixing the two hides whether shipping adds to or removes profit.

How much should I charge for an Etsy POD product?

Work in reverse. Start from a target profit or margin per order, add your costs (production, shipping, packaging, ads) and the Etsy fees that scale with price, then solve for the selling price that reaches the target. Pricing tools automate this reverse calculation for each candidate margin.

Are Etsy POD products profitable?

Some are, but profitability depends on the complete unit economics: price, fees, production cost, shipping, advertising and volume. Measuring contribution profit per order tells a seller whether a specific product is worth scaling.
