Etsy Offsite Ads Profit Margin Calculator: What the Fee Does to Your Margin
Model how an attributed Offsite Ads order changes contribution profit at the 12% and 15% rates, where the per-order maximum applies, and how to blend the impact across your orders.
What Etsy Offsite Ads Are
Etsy buys advertising placements on channels outside Etsy โ search engines, social platforms and shopping networks. When one of those ads leads to an order in a shop, that order is attributed to the program and a fee is charged on it.
Run by Etsy, off the marketplace
Etsy manages the campaigns, targeting and spend across channels outside Etsy. There is no campaign dashboard for the seller to operate and no per-keyword budget to pull.
A fee model, not a budget
The cost is a percentage of an attributed sale, not a spend the seller controls. If an order is not attributed to the program, that order carries no Offsite Ads fee.
Attribution decides everything
An order is attributed when Etsy's tracking connects it to an ad interaction within the program's window. The attributed share is the number that turns the program into a measurable cost per sale.
Terms depend on the account
Whether a shop is enrolled and at which published rate follows Etsy's criteria for that account, and those criteria can change. No single rate should be assumed for every seller.
The fee applies to the applicable order amount โ the attributed order's sale amount, including shipping where applicable, as Etsy's policy defines it. Confirm the exact basis in Etsy's current policy, because some order parts can fall outside it.
12% vs 15%: The Two Published Rates
There are two published rates. Which one applies depends on the seller's account circumstances, not on the product, and a seller's rate can change over time.
The 15% rate
Applies to eligible sellers below the published threshold. These accounts are enrolled automatically and opt-out depends on Etsy's terms, which can change as the account's sales history moves.
The 12% rate
Applies to eligible sellers at or above the published threshold, or sellers who have agreed to Etsy's pricing terms. At this tier, sellers normally have an opt-out option per Etsy's published criteria.
Eligibility and the threshold are set by Etsy and can change. A seller below the threshold pays at 15% on attributed orders one month and may reach the 12% tier later โ both would be correct at their time. This page does not claim that every seller pays the same rate, and its examples always state which rate is being applied.
The Per-Order Maximum and Why Not to Convert It
Etsy publishes a maximum for the Offsite Ads fee on an order. In the calculator's current US fee configuration that maximum is US$100.
The cap is a ceiling, not a target
Once the applicable percentage reaches the maximum, the fee stops rising with the order amount. On a high-ticket order, the measured fee is the maximum, not the uncapped percentage.
Published in US dollars
The maximum is denominated in US dollars in the current configuration. Etsy does not publish a matching set of per-country caps for this fee.
Do not convert it to a local cap
Converting US$100 into GBP, EUR or another currency creates a number Etsy does not publish, at a rate that moves every day, for a fee basis that can differ by market. This page states the US-configuration maximum in US dollars and does not invent local-currency caps.
Verify before trusting a cap
Confirm the current maximum and the order basis against Etsy's policy before applying either to a model. The workspace applies the maximum only within its own described configuration.
Etsy Ads vs Offsite Ads: Two Different Machines
Both are advertising on Etsy, and they are easy to confuse. They work differently and they should be modeled as separate lines.
Etsy Ads
- Runs inside Etsy on search and related placements.
- The seller picks listings and sets a daily budget.
- Pays per click at the auction price until the budget is spent.
- A result can be a click that never produces an order, and the clicks are still paid for.
Offsite Ads
- Runs outside Etsy on search engines, social and shopping networks.
- Etsy controls placement and spend for the shop.
- Pays only when an order is attributed, as a percentage of that order.
- No attributed order means no Offsite Ads fee for that order.
Treat the two as separate lines in the model. An Etsy Ads cost is driven by clicks and budget; an Offsite Ads cost is driven by attributed orders and the applicable rate. Blending one into the other hides where the money actually goes.
When Offsite Ads Turn a Profitable Product Into a Weak-Margin Product
The mechanism is simple: the attributed fee is subtracted from the same contribution that already absorbed every other fee and cost. Thin-margin products lose the most.
The fee stacks on the fee stack
On an attributed order, 15% arrives on top of the 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing. A product that clears its costs at a modest contribution margin hands a large part of that margin to a single attributed order.
Thin margins break first
A low-priced item with a small per-order contribution can flip from modestly profitable to near break-even the moment one order is attributed. The identical order without attribution sits at the higher contribution.
Attributed share is the real dial
If only some orders are attributed, charging the fee on every order is as wrong as ignoring it. Blend the attributed share with the non-attributed share to get the per-order truth.
The maximum is the relief valve
On high-ticket orders the published maximum keeps the fee from growing without limit, preserving contribution that an uncapped percentage would erase.
A product can look profitable in its listing and be weak only on its attributed orders. That split is exactly what the worked scenario below makes visible.
Worked Scenario: One Order, With and Without Offsite Ads
Illustrative only โ a US seller, item at $24.00 with $4.00 shipping charged, product cost $9.00, actual shipping $3.50, payment processing at the domestic rate, no currency conversion. Rates depend on the account; every figure is rounded to cents.
Contribution profit in three states
| State | Order amount | Etsy fees + Offsite Ads | Product & shipping | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No Offsite Ads on this order | $28.00 | $3.11 | $12.50 | $12.39 |
| Attributed, 15% published rate | $28.00 | $7.31 | $12.50 | $8.19 |
| Attributed, 12% published rate | $28.00 | $6.47 | $12.50 | $9.03 |
Etsy charges here: listing $0.20, transaction fee 6.5% of the $28.00 order ($1.82), payment processing ($1.09), plus the Offsite Ads fee โ 15% = $4.20 or 12% = $3.36. The attributed 15% order gives up $4.20 of contribution that a non-attributed order keeps, and the 12% order keeps $0.84 of that back.
A big-ticket order and the maximum
| State | Order | Etsy fees + Offsite Ads | Product & other costs | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $750 item, no Offsite Ads | $750.00 | $71.70 | $200.00 | $478.30 |
| Attributed at 15%, uncapped | $750.00 | $184.20 | $200.00 | $365.80 |
| Attributed at 15%, capped at US$100 | $750.00 | $171.70 | $200.00 | $378.30 |
15% of $750 would be $112.50; the US-configuration maximum holds the fee at US$100, so contribution keeps $12.50 that the uncapped figure would take. Product and other costs of $200 are illustrative, and fees can vary by country and account.
Blending attribution: if 30% of this product's orders were attributed at 15%, the weighted contribution per order is 0.70 ร $12.39 + 0.30 ร $8.19 = $11.13 โ a $1.26 reduction from the no-offsite number across all orders.
Single illustrative set of assumptions for one seller type. The rate, the threshold and the attribution window are account-specific โ run the real numbers in the workspace rather than carrying these figures.
How the Offsite Ads Impact Is Calculated
The calculation isolates the attributed order first, applies the rate, limits the fee by the published maximum where it applies, and then blends the result with the non-attributed orders.
Offsite Ads fee = applicable order amount ร applicable published rate
Then, in order:
- Limit the fee to the published per-order maximum where it applies
- Contribution (attributed) = order revenue โ Etsy fees โ Offsite Ads fee โ product and other costs
- Contribution (not attributed) = order revenue โ Etsy fees โ product and other costs
- Blended contribution = attributed share ร attributed contribution + (1 โ attributed share) ร non-attributed contribution
No universal rate is assumed, and no local-currency version of the maximum is stated. Fee structures vary by seller country and account circumstances; this site keeps its fee configuration per seller country and mirrors the fee values Etsy publishes at the time of writing.

Etsy Offsite Ads Questions
What are Etsy Offsite Ads?
A program in which Etsy runs advertising for a shop on channels outside Etsy, such as search engines, social platforms and shopping networks. When an ad interaction leads to an order attributed to the program, Etsy charges a fee on that order. Etsy manages the campaigns and spend; the seller does not buy offsite placements directly.
How much does Etsy charge for Offsite Ads?
A percentage of an attributed order, at one of two published rates: 15% for eligible sellers below the published threshold and 12% for eligible sellers at or above it. Which rate applies depends on the account, and Etsy states a per-order maximum, so no single percentage should be assumed for every seller.
Do I have to pay for Offsite Ads on every order?
No. The fee is paid only on orders Etsy attributes to the program. Orders that are not attributed carry no Offsite Ads fee, which is why an attributed share is used when blending the impact across all orders.
What is the difference between Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads?
Etsy Ads runs inside Etsy on search and related placements, where the seller chooses listings, sets a daily budget and pays per click. Offsite Ads runs outside Etsy, where Etsy controls placement and spend and the seller pays a percentage only when an attributed order occurs.
Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?
Opt-out depends on Etsy's published criteria and they can change. Sellers at or above the applicable threshold normally have an opt-out option, while sellers below it are enrolled automatically. Verify the current terms for the specific account.
Is there a maximum Offsite Ads fee per order?
Etsy publishes a per-order maximum for the fee. In the calculator's current US fee configuration that maximum is US$100; once it applies it stops the percentage from growing with the order amount.
Does Offsite Ads take 15% of every sale?
No. The 15% figure is one of two published rates and it is charged only on attributed orders. A shop can be at the 12% rate, or pay no offsite fee on non-attributed orders, so applying 15% to every sale would overstate the cost.
How do I include Offsite Ads in my profit calculation?
Start with the contribution profit of the order without Offsite Ads, subtract the attributed fee for orders Etsy attributes (at the applicable rate, capped at the published maximum), and weight the result by the expected attributed share of orders.
Why don't you convert the US$100 maximum into other currencies?
Because Etsy publishes the maximum in US dollars and does not publish matching local caps. Converting it would manufacture a number at a daily-moving exchange rate that no published policy supports. This page states the US-configuration maximum in US dollars and avoids inventing other-currency caps.
